I do
believe this is my third attempt at writing a fashion blog and whilst I, as
well as others, question my persistence, it comes down to one simple thing,
Fashion is a great love of mine.
Born in
England and raised in Nigeria, you can say that the concept of fashion was a
fantasy. I wore a uniform until I attended high school and the very little
exposure I got at boarding school during the end of semester dances were
slightly disastrous at the very least. We had no TVs to watch and no magazines
to read; the focus was simply to get EDUCATED. My only creative outlet at the
time revolved around books and dance. I was into writing short stories and
stepping to anything that had a hot beat.
Following
my transmigration back to England, I discovered the show ‘Sex and the City’ at
age 15 and the rest was history. Carrie Bradshaw literally inspired me to wear
what I want, when I want… without consequence and that’s partly what I aim to
do with this blog.
My love
for fashion was further cemented when I got my first retail job at River
Island. The accessories, clothes and shoes were my best friends and the
customers turned into my clients. They helped me understand and develop
different style personalities leading to many more opportunities at
franchises like Forever 21 and Marks & Spencer as well as a Styling
Opportunity at London Fashion Week ’14.
Fashion
and I are harmoniously co-dependent and moving forward, I would love to work on
every facet of the fashion métier- from designing to merchandising to styling.
I would
like to welcome you to my blog whether you’re just discovering the DM brand or
whether you’ve been with me since the very beginning. I am Destini Monet and
you’ve been reading ‘The Black Mannequin’. XO
